Characterization of Bacteriocin Producing Enterococcus faecium L17

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the lactic acid bacteria strain capable of producing bacteriocin. The strain was isolated from healthy chicken cecum and performed biochemical properties using the API test and phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA sequencing, and the strain was Enterococcus faecium L17. The culture supernatant of E. faecium L17 showed antibacterial activity against pathogen bacteria. The antibacterial substance was stable when treated with catalase, lipase, and heat to 90¡ÆC, and it was inactivated by proteolytic enzymes. The genes of enterocin L50B and enterocin B were detected in strain L17. The existence of enterocin structural genes presents what offers a big possibility to find bacteriocin-producing strain.
